STORIES
JOURNEY TO ITALY
Pantelleria is primordial matter. Mother Matter. Volcanic earth and magmatic rocks, tuff and precious obsidian.
The powerful dissonance of lights and shadows, the mystery of silence, the magic of the sea, the scents, the colors in perpetual dialogue between the Mediterranean sea and the nearby land of Africa, emanate a seductive force akin to enchantment.
Pantelleria is a collection of artisanally crafted tiles dedicated to the spirit of the island from which it takes its name. Drawing inspiration from the color of the original material, namely that of volcanic lava, all formats and decorations are produced with a black base, made using refractory clays of black color.
Base Ossidiana - Texture Ossidiana
The dark base enhances and brings out the Mediterranean colors of deep blue, inspired by the ultramarine sea, the pink reminiscent of costellation of Venus, the green of capers, the white of the lime spread on the vaults of the dammusi, and the black of lava obsidian.
A typically Pantescan palette that takes on material declinations when color meets the black of the clay, or glassy when color oxidizes into drops that remain on the surface of the product.

MadreMateria is a research and experimentation workshop born to continue the experience gained in the enhancement of Pantelleria’s architectural and landscape heritage, giving voice to the creative and holistic vision of Elena Pancaldi, architect and designer, who has been an islander by adoption for over twenty years.
Graduated in Architecture from the Politecnico di Milano in 1997, she opened ELENAPANCALDISTUDIO in Modena where she lives and works, leading a team composed of architects, designers, landscapers, and graphic designers engaged in predominantly residential architecture projects, luxury retail, hospitality, landscape, and collectible design.
Over time, a series of site-specific works studied for Pantelleria have encouraged the development of a very personal approach to the themes of recovering Pantelleria’s vernacular architecture and preserving the spirit of the place.
